Regulations for Approved Driving Instructors

The regulations that apply to driving instructors and why they are necessary.

It’s an offence for any driving instructor to teach someone to drive unless they are on the Road Safety Authority’s register of Approved Driving Instructors.

The RSA operates a structured regulatory system to standardize and maintain a high quality of driver instruction in Ireland. There are a number of laws and penalties which apply to ADIs.

Make sure that the person providing driving lesson to you is an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Check their permit and make sure it’s not expired.

What do I need to do before I take my Driving Test?

In Order to obtain a Driving License in Ireland. One has to go through few steps before eligible to sit the driving test.

First step is to obtain a Learner permit.

Before you apply for a first-time learner permit in any category, you must complete and pass the driver theory test for that category.

The theory test checks your knowledge of topics such as:

The test is computer-based and has been designed to be simple and intuitive to use.  You will have a chance to take a practice session on the day before the actual test.

Once you pass you Theory Test, you can then apply for your first Leaner Permit.

After obtaining the Learner Permit, you will need to get driving lessons with an Qualified and registered driving instructor, these driving lessons are know as EDT

Essential Driver Training (EDT)

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a structured training program for learner drivers consisting of 12 driving sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), or six sessions if you are eligible for reduced EDT.

Once you complete you EDT Course and your Learner Permit is older than 6 months, you can apply for your Driving Test.
